The Page/Zimmerman Collection

Today we offer the first set of disks from the Page/Zimmerman collection. A bit of history and reminiscing...

Early on I gravitated towards the demo and music scene. I played some games, but was more interested in seeing the new graphics, logos, songs, and general commodore goodness. Alot of the bbs's I called were devoted to those types of programs, so I started amassing a collection. One of the bbs's I was on at the time was Electron (an NTSC demo group) HQ. I got to know them a bit from my trading of demos and music, and chatted with them about doing some mail trading. They put me in touch with one of their contacts who was a collector as well. His handle was Rundy, and his name was George Page.

100,000 media images & The DLH Collection

Greetings.

A little before the end of last year (2011) we indexed and added the 100,000th disk image! That's over 99,000 d64's and a smattering of d81's and t64's. This year we'd like to finally work through the still imposing backlog of collections as well as introduce a couple new site features...   stay tuned.

To celebrate we're posting the first part of The DLH Collection: you may know him as the admin of bombjack.org and hard working Commodore print media preservation guru, but he started building up his disk collection back in the 80's in both Germany and the US and has now gifted the scene with the first part of that collection as well as the story behind it. A small excerpt:

I continued mail trading (Netherlands, Texas & Michigan) for a couple of years, sending and receiving multiple packages weekly. So much the local postmaster asked for the canceled stamps on all of the packages. He was a big stamp collector in the little town of less than 3000 people or I would have been worried the man was after me...

 Read the rest here!

Thanks from Elwix and Demonger to all hard working media rippers and to TMB for continuing to host a mirror of the SB files. Keep scene spirit alive!

Greetings.

SceneBase user1 has made inquiry:

Hi guys, my anzacs collection is 35.8 MB Anzacs_Collection_Jazzcat.rar Yours is: smaller then 23 MB if i'm right. Any reasons ?

Addressing this gives a good example regarding one of the reasons we think an effort to process/repackage in a standard way2 is worthwile...

Reader is correct - the original archive we have for 'Anzacs_Collection_Jazzcat.rar' is 37,555,766 bytes. SceneBase version is 24,085,514 bytes. Why the big difference? [more ⇒]

Greetings.

Less than a month and collectors can now find the image sets from a second mirror location in Norway, hosted/maintained by The MeatBall. If you prefer FTP or hail from Western hemisphere you may want to continue with the US source at SceneBase - but if you are European or would rather leech HTTP, please thank The MeatBall for his 15Mbit link. Note on the collections page there are now multiple links per file and location flags will help you decide your preferred provider. Mirror links are coming up and should be live for most or all sets soon. [more ⇒]

Two Weeks in Review, Mirror Hunt Continues...

Greetings.

After the first two weeks of uptime we've served over 2,000 downloads and it appears the idea of a central directory of collection links has been welcomed. I'll throw the plea out once again for persons interested in mirroring some or all of the SB sets. The ideal situation is that you see two or even three different download links per set on the collections page, and that this site serves more as a means to lead collectors to the files than as a file host itself. At least that is Plan A... Plan B involves an army of goats uploading the sets to DepositFiles and MegaUpload every 3 months, and that's going to require much more clover than I have on hand at the moment. Step up and be a mirror! Allow me to task my small ruminants with more compelling activities!

Now let us respond to some other questions and suggestions from around the scene... [more ⇒]
